For most third-party apps, copy an image, select the app in Finder, open File → Get Info, click the small icon, and paste. Some Apple apps cannot be changed this way, and app updates may reset the icon.
Before you start
Choose a square, high-resolution image with a transparent background when possible. PNG is convenient for most one-off changes; ICNS is the native Mac icon container and can include several sizes. Keep the source file somewhere you can find again in case an app update replaces the custom icon.
Make sure the icon is yours to use. Downloading an image does not automatically grant permission to redistribute it or include it in a commercial theme.
Method 1: change one app icon with Finder
- Copy the replacement image. Open the image in Preview, choose Edit → Select All, then Edit → Copy. If you are copying an existing Mac icon, open that item’s Get Info window, select its small icon, and copy it.
- Find the app. Open Finder and go to Applications. Select the app you want to customize without opening it.
- Open Get Info. Choose File → Get Info or press Command-I.
- Select the small icon. Click the icon in the upper-left corner of the Info window. A selection outline should appear around it.
- Paste. Choose Edit → Paste or press Command-V. macOS may ask for an administrator name and password when the item requires additional permission.
- Check the result. Quit and reopen the app if necessary. The Finder and Dock can refresh at different times, so an old image may remain visible briefly.

How to restore the original app icon
- Select the app in Finder and open File → Get Info.
- Click the small custom icon at the top of the Info window.
- Choose Edit → Cut. The original icon should return.
If you used an icon manager, use its restore command first.
Why a custom Mac icon may not change
Paste is unavailable
Confirm that you selected the small icon at the top of Get Info, not the larger preview. The app may also be protected or stored somewhere your account cannot modify.
The Dock still shows the old icon
Quit and reopen the app first. If the Dock still has an old copy, remove that Dock shortcut and add the app again. Avoid deleting broad system caches just to refresh one icon.
The icon reverted after an update
An app update can reset a custom icon. Keep the source icon so you can reapply it after an update.
The image looks blurry
Start with a clean square image at a large size. Tiny screenshots, JPEG artifacts, and an icon with too much empty padding usually look soft in the Dock.
A built-in Apple app will not change
Protected system apps do not behave like ordinary third-party apps. Do not disable System Integrity Protection just to force an icon change. Use a tool only when it explicitly supports your exact macOS version and gives you a restore path.
